Governmental Reform
- Proportional Representation – We advocate for proportional representation in the Federal house and all state legislatures’ lower houses.
- Taxation – While we believe minimal taxation may serve a legitimate purpose, we favor simpler and less invasive methods of taxation, levying only the amount required for a functioning government.
- Overreaching Authority – We advocate for the reduction of unelected authority. All levels of government should reduce bureaucratic rule-making and instead follow the Constitutional procedure for the creation of new laws. Emergency decrees and legislation should not be abused, and must be strictly limited in scope and time.
- Budget and Finance – We believe the government should not spend more than it receives in revenue, and that deficit spending is ultimately destructive to society.
- Transparency and Accountability – We prioritize transparency and accountability in government. We support measures that ensure open and honest communication between elected officials and the public, as well as mechanisms to hold those in power accountable for their actions.
- Anti-Corruption – Cronyism and self-dealing by government officials erodes public trust in our institutions. We strongly support anti-corruption laws and we seek greater anti-corruption enforcement.
Criminal Justice Reform
- Qualified Immunity – We support laws to end qualified immunity. Government officials and their agents must be accountable for their actions.
- Civil Asset Forfeiture – We support laws to end civil asset forfeiture. Assets should only be seized upon an actual conviction and for the purpose of making restitution to victims.
- Victimless Crimes – Laws that create crimes without victims should be repealed and non-violent offenders’ records should be expunged. We support ending the drug war, decriminalizing sex work, decriminalizing gambling, and generally repealing any law that creates a crime where there is no actual victim.
- Jury nullification – Juries should be informed of their right to rule “not guilty” to any charge under a law they find unjust.
Social Reform
- Environment – Humanity depends on the environment for its existence, and that environment must be protected. This protection must be balanced with individual and economic freedoms. The free market should be unleashed to address these issues, and entities that harm others via pollution should not be allowed to hide behind government mandates or permits. Class-action lawsuits should be allowed against polluters.
- Healthcare – We support right-to-try laws, revocation of Certificate of Need laws, and the elimination of governmental restrictions on providing healthcare. We oppose regulatory capture in medicine and health insurance.
-
Free Movement – The Liberal Party is founded upon the belief that individual liberty and economic freedom are inherent to all individuals regardless of their place of birth. In a truly liberal society, all people must be free to pursue happiness and prosperity for themselves and their loved ones wherever opportunities present themselves. Free markets, free trade, and free people can only be achieved if it is accompanied by free movement of labor, free commerce between individuals, and the freedom to leave when opportunities are no longer available.
In an increasingly connected world, free migration, through cultural understanding and economic prosperity, will promote peace, economic growth, tolerance, and innovation. Therefore, in the interest of economic prosperity and the hope of a more peaceful and innovative people, The Liberal Party supports and promotes policies that maximize free migration, free trade, and expanded federalism. We support any effort to bring about an end to the construct of nationalism and to promote a culture of individual liberty and harmony.
Election Reform
- Ballot Access – Rules for gaining access to the ballot should be fair and equal, regardless of political affiliation.
- Voter Access – We believe all adult citizens have a right to vote. We reject any law that would make voting more cumbersome or less accessible to the average person.
- Voting Methods – We support implementing alternative voting systems for single winner races, such as approval voting, ranked-choice, as appropriate, to replace the current First Past the Post system.
Individual Rights
- Self-Defense – Every individual has the right to protect themselves, their loved ones, and their justly-acquired property. Peaceful citizens should be secure in their right to own and carry firearms and other weapons, and this right should never be abridged without due process of law.
- Bodily Autonomy – An adult individual’s bodily autonomy is absolute. All laws violating that autonomy are illegitimate and must be repealed.
- Freedom of Speech – Freedom of speech is critical for a functioning society. Therefore, the government must not infringe this freedom directly or indirectly.
- Religion – Individuals have the right to hold and practice religious beliefs, or lack thereof. Therefore, government must be secular. Government should neither promote nor suppress any particular religious belief.
- Relationships – Adults have the right to consensual relationships free from governmental involvement.
- LGBT+ Issues – We believe that no adult should be denied any right, including but not limited to: the right to marriage, child custody, adoption, immigration, or military service on the grounds of sexual orientation, preference, gender, gender identity, gender expression, or family status. We believe that individuals have the sole authority to determine their gender identity or gender expression.
- Privacy – We believe that people should have the right to keep their personal data private. Government should be forbidden from obtaining personal data via coercion or commercial transactions with private businesses. We favor strong data privacy laws, as well as strong banking secrecy laws.
- Education – We support the right of parents to educate their children as they see fit. The Federal government should have no role in the educational system.
Economics
- Free Markets – We reject any unnecessary impositions on the right of individuals or businesses to trade freely and/or maintain the livelihoods of their choosing.
- Private Property – We strongly believe in the right of individuals to own property, for personal or business use. We stand against any nationalization of industry or property and against unfair uses of state powers of condemnation, such as eminent domain.
- Currency – Individuals have the right to exchange goods and services using any mutually-agreeable form of payment.
- Land Use Regulations – Land-use regulations negatively impact economic development and mobility; thus, we support the repeal and/or simplification of most land-use regulations.
- Negative Externalities – Dealing with the emergent harms that arise as an unintended consequence of commercial or social activity is a legitimate function of government, however we favor the least amount of regulation necessary to maintain a healthy and prosperous society.
Foreign Policy
- Treaties and Pacts – We recognize the interconnectedness of the global community and advocate for diplomacy, cooperation, and collaboration with other nations. We encourage participation in economic, defensive, and other treaties with other nations so long as these agreements are, and remain, of mutual benefit.
- War – We believe that only Congress has the power to declare war, and that war should never be declared unless it is in direct defense of the US or its allies.
- Trade – Free trade is a universal benefit to all people, and acts as a disincentive for states to engage in war. Free exchange and trade between individuals within and outside the country should not be hindered.
