Preamble
We believe in the vast potential of humanity.
Humans naturally want to improve themselves, their communities, and their world. They have formed governments to aid in these goals.
The sole legitimate purpose of government is protect the rights of individuals to life, liberty, property, expression, and the pursuit of happiness; in order to foster human progress.
However, a government that is corrupt, ineffective, abusive, or unduly burdensome is an antagonist to human potential and the betterment of the human condition.
A government that does not benefit its citizens should not be allowed to persist. Therefore, we desire to reform and constrain government so that it serves nothing more or less than this singular purpose.
Our Values
The core of the Liberal vision is our values. It is these values, rather than the fleeting issues of the day, that provide the direction for the parties and candidates who unite in common purpose under the Liberal banner.
Liberty
The foundation of human flourishing is liberty. We value all freedoms emergent from nature – those of thought and of speech, of association and of worship, of property and of conscience. We value political liberties, civil liberties, and economic liberties alike.
Universality
We recognize that humanity, though often separated by distance, language, history, and governance, is inextricably bound together by a shared destiny. We strive to mend those divisions and move towards a free and united humanity. We value the widespread sharing of ideas, barrier-free exchange of goods, increased worldwide interconnectedness, and free association and movement. We believe that liberalization, marketization, and trade lead to a better future for all people, not only some, and we value peaceful global engagement towards a more liberal world.
Pluralism
Individuals living freely in the manner they see fit and in peaceful cooperation with others have a diversity of viewpoints that strengthens and enriches society.
Consent
The only just exercise of power or authority is one which derives from consent. We acknowledge the essential role of consent in both private and state interactions and exchanges.
Democracy
We believe that all political power vests with the people, and that any political system should respect the sovereignty and ultimate authority of the people.
Peace
We value a world of peace between individuals as well as between nations. To that end, we support engagement and understanding, commercial and cultural exchange, and the peaceful reconciliation of conflicts and disputes. While self-defense may be necessary due to the actions of others, the goal must always be the restoration of a state of peaceful coexistence.
Reason
The future will be built by the effort of the human mind. We value the thoughtful interrogation of ideas, evidence-based thinking, and the deliberate and careful application of reason.
Truth
Difficult problems can only be solved with factual understanding of our challenges. Neither a healthy political order nor a robust civil society can endure without truth and openness. We recognize the importance of transparency from political and community leaders, as well as from the organizations they lead. Further, we acknowledge that in order for markets to properly function they must be transparent, and accurate information must be available to all involved.
Dignity
We acknowledge the inherent human dignity and worth of all people, and that communities function best with mutual respect.
Equality
Equality before the law is vital to a just society, therefore there must be no special classes of people.
Progress
We focus squarely on advancing quality of life and improving the human condition. We wish to preserve what works and replace what does not. We do not seek to recapture, recreate, or regress to some bygone era. We seek instead to create a better, brighter, and more prosperous future for all.
